Insecurity bedeviling primary health care in Benin City

Benin, Edo – High level of insecurity has posed serious threats to the development of Primary Health Care in Benin City and environ as doctors and nurses work in an atmosphere of fear due to incessant attacks by criminal elements, which many call on government to address.
A working investigation to the Oredo Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Sapele road by Second East Circular road junction, this reporter gathered that robbers incessantly attack doctors, nurses and patients at night, a situation which militates against their working pattern vis-a-vis admitting and attending to patients with vary degree of sicknesses.
Findings as to why the issues of insecurity within the premises were yet unaddressed, some health workers, said that they had complained to appropriate authority and that there wasn't a positive change regarding their complaints.
According to health officials who craved anonymity, Governor Godwin Òbaseki-led administration prioritize health care delivery, and should not handle the insecurity situation with levity.
They however condemned the high spate of insecurity which has culminated in callous attack and robbery of nurses and patients' belongings.
They appealed to relevant authorities in the state particularly governor Obaseki to charge the contractor handling the new hospital building in the premises to expedite action before he leaves office in November.
