I am forced to write about Ramat Park flyover project because some uninformed persons sponsored albeit, have picked holes with the concept. They don't see why it is a priority. And I don't blame them. Ignorance is bliss.

Ramat Park, located in Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, was primarily built in honor of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, a former Nigerian Head of State for his contributions to national development before his assassination in 1976.

The Park was so built as a memorial to honor his legacy and commemorate his impact on Nigeria's history and also to enhance public infrastructure and provide landmarks in Benin city. The park is a space for relaxation, recreation, and social activities for residents of the city and visitors.

By it's location Ramat Park is a major transportation hub in Benin City, facilitating major routes in and out such as the Benin-Auchi Expressway and Benin-Asaba Expressway.

However the park lost its recreational status with time. Today it serves a coven for all sorts of juju medicine providers while serving as a criminal hideout especially at night. More worrisome is the notoriety, the place has gained for its frequent traffic congestion, a result of high vehicle volumes converging from multiple directions.

This gridlock, often compounded during peak hours and market days, leads to increased travel times, higher fuel consumption, and elevated noise and air pollution, all of which negatively impact the city's traffic.

To address this persistent issue, the Edo State Government led by Senator Monday Okpebholo recently took a bold step by embarking on the construction of a flyover at Ramat Park. This project, flagged off in November 2024, marks a milestone in the city’s urban developmental.

No doubt it is part of a larger initiative to construct multiple flyovers across Benin City, including at Dawson Road Junction and Sapele Road/Adesuwa Road Junction. The projects aim to decongest critical intersections, improve traffic flow, and lay the groundwork for sustainable urban growth of the City.

Flyovers according to authorities are a transformative solution in cities grappling with increasing traffic demands. At their core, they help reduce congestion by allowing vehicles to bypass crowded intersections. For Ramat Park, this means that motorists traveling through the area will no longer endure long queues or frequent stops caused by the roundabout’s current limitations.

By enabling a smoother flow of traffic, the flyover will also enhance connectivity between key parts of Benin City, fostering economic activity and making commutes more predictable and efficient.

Safety is one critical benefit of the Ramat Park flyover. By segregating traffic streams—such as those traveling straight from those making turns—the flyover will significantly reduce the risk of accidents, which are often prevalent at busy intersections.

Furthermore, the flyover will save commuters precious time, eliminating delays caused by traffic gridlocks. This efficiency will be particularly beneficial for businesses reliant on the timely movement of goods and services, ultimately boosting the City's economy.

Environmental benefits are also integral to the project’s promise. By reducing stop-and-go traffic, the flyover will help cut down vehicle emissions and fuel wastage, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. Additionally, emergency services, such as ambulances and fire trucks, will find it easier to navigate the area, ensuring quicker response times during critical situations.

The Ramat Park flyover is expected to be completed within an 18-month timeframe. While construction may temporarily inconvenience road users, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term disruptions. Residents and commuters are encouraged to exercise patience, knowing that the project will usher in a new era of enhanced mobility and urban development for Benin City.

Ultimately, the flyover is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a testament to the Edo State Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens. By addressing the challenges of urban traffic head-on, the flyover will not only transform how people move through the city but also lay a foundation for a more connected, sustainable, and vibrant Benin City.
