Abuja, FCT – A political analyst, Haruna Braimoh has maintained that the autonomy granted to local government by the Supreme Court's July 11, 2023 judgement requires council executives to remain transparent and accountable to the public.
Braimoh made this assertion while addressing the recent suspension of local government chairmen in Edo State by the House of Assembly.
According to him, local government autonomy did not in anyway exclude the council executives from being answerable to Edo people.
"Edo state is among the state in Nigeria operating joint account with local government. local government does not have a particular account.
"Not this kind of autonomy. There's no autonomy of no checks and balances; there's no autonomy of non transparency; there's no autonomy that empowers the local government from non accountability", Braimoh asserted in an interview on Global TV, seen by BENDEL Mirror
He defended governor Monday Okpebholo's decision to demand detailed financial reports from the 18 council chairmen since they assumed office, arguing that such measures align with the principles of accountability.
Meanwhile, a Federal High Court on Monday directed Governor Okpebholo, the Edo State House of Assembly, and other parties in a lawsuit filed by the suspended council chairpersons to maintain status quo, pending further rulings.
