Port Harcourt, Rivers – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Sunday, distributed Federal Government–approved relief materials to persons and communities affected by recent rainstorm and flood disasters in Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II, Rivers State.

The distribution, through its Port Harcourt Operations Office took place at Amadi Opara Okokwu Town Hall and was supervised by the Head of Operations, Eric Ebhodaghe, who led the NEMA team.

While addressing the gathering, Ebhodaghe urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the materials provided as they are meant to cushion the impact of the disaster on their lives and livelihoods.

In her remarks, the Member representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II, Blessing Amadi, expressed gratitude to the NEMA DG for the swift and timely intervention.

She noted that the assistance would go a long way in alleviating the hardships of her constituents who were badly affected by the rainstorm and flood incidents.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the community expressed appreciation and pledged to ensure the relief items are used for the benefit of the affected households.

The approved relief items were mainly food materials and distributed to the affected persons in Elekahia, Ogbunabali, Woji, Ogali, Nchia, and Akpajo communities.

The distribution exercise was conducted with the active participation of community leaders, stakeholders, and beneficiaries. Group photographs were taken to mark the successful conclusion of the exercise.

In Enugu, relief items were also distributed by NEMA Enugu Operations Office in collaboration with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (ENSEMA) for the affected population in Ogui-Eke Community in Udi LGA.

Recall that flood, erosion and windstorm disasters had affected Ogui-Eke earlier this year resulting in destruction of property and farmlands.

Sequel to this, the Enugu Operations Office in collaboration with SEMA Enugu State carried out an impact assessment of the affected areas to determine the extent of damage caused and needs of the affected population.

Flagging off the distribution of the relief items at Ogui-Eke on August 22, the NEMA Head Enugu Operations Office, Ngozi Echeazu, on behalf of the federal government empathised with the affected persons over the unfortunate incident.

She said that the approved relief items by the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar are to cushion the effects of suffering of the affected population and not a replacement of their loss.

Echeazu urged the community to always clear their waterways and ensure that houses are not constructed on water channels.

In his response, the Chairman Ogui-Eke community, Ichie Nwanamahi Kennedy expressed gratitude to the Federal Government/NEMA for the timely relief intervention.

He assured that the community will embark on drainage desilting and will work with the Udi LGA Urban Planning Department to ensure that buildings are not constructed on waterways and those already constructed will be demolished.

Major Highlights were the direct distribution of relief materials to recipients including Rice, Garri, Spaghetti, Vegetable oil, Seasoning cubes, Tomato paste, and iodised salt.
