Asaba, Delta – The Delta State Government has recorded an impressive 80% success rate in its fight against pipeline vandalism and illegal oil bunkering, according to a recent announcement by the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. (Chief) Peter Uviejitobor.

The milestone, disclosed in Asaba, underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding its oil and gas infrastructure and boosting production in the Niger Delta region.

The achievement follows the establishment of a Special Task Force, which has been working closely with security agencies to protect critical oil and gas facilities across the state.

Hon. Uviejitobor highlighted that the task force’s collaborative efforts have significantly reduced incidents of vandalism and illegal bunkering, which have long plagued Nigeria’s oil industry, causing substantial economic losses and environmental degradation.

“This 80% success rate is a testament to the proactive measures taken by the Delta State Government under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori,” Uviejitobor said.

“The task force, in partnership with security operatives, has been relentless in ensuring that our oil and gas assets are protected, thereby creating a safer environment for investment and production.”

In addition to curbing vandalism, the Ministry of Oil and Gas has prioritized ensuring that oil companies operating in the state fulfill their corporate social responsibilities.

Uviejitobor noted that the ministry has enforced strict compliance with regulations, compelling oil companies to promptly clean up oil spills and provide fair compensation to host communities affected by their operations.

These measures have fostered greater trust and cooperation between the government, oil companies, and local communities.

The commissioner’s remarks also highlighted Delta State’s recognition as the 2024 National Award Winner for the Safest and Most Peaceful State for Oil and Gas Investment in Nigeria.

The award, conferred by a national body, acknowledges the state’s strides in creating a secure and conducive environment for oil and gas activities, a critical sector for Nigeria’s economy.

“Delta State’s success in tackling pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering not only boosts oil production but also ensures that our communities benefit from the resources extracted from their land,” Uviejitobor added.

“We remain committed to sustaining these efforts and further improving the state’s oil and gas ecosystem.”

The Niger Delta region, where Delta State is located, has historically faced significant challenges due to pipeline vandalism and illegal oil bunkering, resulting in billions of dollars in losses annually and severe environmental damage.

The state’s recent achievements signal a turning point in addressing these issues, positioning Delta as a model for other oil-producing states in Nigeria.

The Delta State Government has pledged to continue its collaboration with security agencies, oil companies, and local stakeholders to maintain the momentum and further reduce illegal activities in the oil sector.

Plans are also underway to strengthen community engagement and explore sustainable development initiatives to address the root causes of vandalism, such as unemployment and poverty in the region.
