Enugu – In a significant move to bolster agricultural productivity, the Enugu State Government today flagged off the distribution of over 40,000 bags of free fertilizers and other agro inputs at Michael Okpara Square.
The event, attended by farmers, government officials, and stakeholders, underscores the state’s commitment to supporting its agricultural sector and ensuring food security.
Governor Peter Mbah, speaking at the event, highlighted the success of a similar initiative launched a year ago at the same venue, where 12,000 bags of fertilizers, power tillers, rice and bean seedlings, cassava stems, herbicides, and other inputs were distributed free of charge.
“The outcome is the bumper harvest we’ve witnessed this year and the noticeable decline in prices of staple crops,” the governor stated, emphasizing that deliberate investments in agriculture are yielding tangible results.
Farmers were described as the “backbone of our communities,” with the governor acknowledging their critical role in sustaining the state’s economy and food supply.
To further empower them, the government is establishing 200-hectare Farm Estates in each of Enugu State’s 260 wards.
These estates will be equipped with warehouses, irrigation systems, tractor sheds, electricity, water, and mechanization services.
The state has already taken delivery of 102 tractors, with 98 more en route and 800 additional units to be assembled locally at a nearly completed (95%) assembly plant in Enugu.
In addition, the Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo is being upgraded into a University of Agriculture to enhance agricultural education and innovation.
The government is also setting up Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones and Agro Hubs to scale up food security, agro-processing, and job creation across the state. The governor reiterated that the distribution process is transparent and accessible, targeting over 60,000 registered farmers in the state’s database.
“These fertilizers are given out free of charge, directly to farmers. There is no red tape, no middlemen, and no need to know anyone in government,” he assured.
The initiative has been hailed as a game-changer for Enugu’s agricultural sector, with farmers expressing optimism about increased yields and improved livelihoods.
The state’s strategic investments are poised to position Enugu as a hub for agricultural innovation and food security in Nigeria.
