Benin, Edo – The Edo State Sickle Cell Club received a boost during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, who reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving the lives of sickle cell sufferers.
In a significant gesture, Dr. Oshiomhole presented a N500,000 cheque to the club on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo, in fulfilment of earlier pledge to the club, signaling support for the community’s ongoing struggles.
During the visit recently, Dr. Oshiomhole assured the club that the state government is dedicated to public health, particularly for those battling sickle cell disease.
He pledged to advocate for bone marrow transplants, a critical treatment for eligible patients within the required age range, and called on well-meaning Nigerians to join the effort to support the sickle cell community.
“We stand with you, and I will raise my voice to ensure your needs are met,” he told the group, led by club president Comrade Charles Edigin.
The N500,000 donation, while welcomed, highlights the need for more comprehensive measures to address the systemic challenges faced by sickle cell sufferers, including limited access to specialized care and pervasive stigma.
Edigin expressed gratitude for the commissioner’s support and accessibility but emphasized the need for broader policy interventions to ensure affordable treatment and public awareness.
The visit underscores the Edo State Sickle Cell Club’s ongoing efforts to secure meaningful support from the state government.
While Dr. Oshiomhole’s assurances and the donation mark a step forward, the club continues to seek more engagement with the Okpebholo-led administration to push for policies that integrate sickle cell care into the state’s healthcare framework.
As the community battles daily challenges, the administration is urged to translate its commitments into tangible actions to uplift Edo’s sickle cell sufferers.
