Ekpoma, Edo – The management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma has firmly denied accusations leveled by former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who claimed in a widely circulated video that the institution issues certificates to students who rarely, if ever, attend classes.

The rebuttal came during a ceremonial event honoring a distinguished alumnus, highlighting the university's commitment to academic integrity amid lingering disputes from Obaseki's tenure.

Obaseki, who served as governor from 2016 to 2024 and was the statutory visitor to the state-owned university, made the remarks in the viral clip shortly after facing counter-allegations of underfunding AAU during his administration.

Critics, including university stakeholders, have long accused his government of starving the institution of necessary resources, exacerbating operational challenges.

Obaseki's claims appear to echo earlier reports from 2023, when a Special Intervention Team (SIT) he established uncovered alleged irregularities, including certificate and transcript racketeering, at the university.

However, AAU officials insist these issues have been addressed and do not reflect current practices.

Speaking at the event to honor Dr. Isinene Onoabhagbe, a globally recognized expert in clinical informatics and health data science, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel emphasized the merit-based nature of AAU's academic achievements.

"We’re proud to count Dr. Onoabhagbe among our esteemed alumni. We anticipate her continued impact in medicine, health data science, and global public health," Prof. Samuel stated, saying, "Our graduates excel through hard work and resilience, earning their certificates and distinctions through merit, not purchase."

Dr. Onoabhagbe, unable to attend in person, was represented by fellow alumnus Dr. Obasanmi Jude.
