Abakaliki, Ebonyi – A significant infrastructure milestone has been achieved in Ebonyi State with the successful completion of a N25 million solar-powered motorized borehole project in Otsokpuru, within the Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency.
Funded under the 2024 Federal Government Budget, the project was tracked and verified by Tracka, a citizen-led initiative dedicated to monitoring public projects, which confirmed its operational status and the positive impact it is already delivering to the local community.
The borehole, part of a broader N235 million allocation for the Provision of Integrated/Solar-Powered Boreholes and Road Construction in the Inyimoka-Ogboriga Communities, marks a key step toward improving access to clean water in the region.
Tracka’s verification highlighted the project’s completion, showcasing its role as a model of effective budget implementation.
Residents of Otsokpuru have expressed relief, with community leaders noting that the reliable water supply will enhance health, agriculture, and daily life.
However, progress on the wider N235 million initiative remains mixed. Tracka reported that while the Umuoghara community road has been graded and equipped with drainage systems, it is yet to be asphalted.
Similarly, the borehole in this area has seen the installation of the sump, but the stand and overhead tanks are still pending. The ongoing nature of these components underscores the need for continued oversight to ensure full delivery.
The completion of the Otsokpuru borehole aligns with the Ebonyi State government’s recent efforts to boost rural infrastructure, as evidenced by the ongoing 8km road project connecting Ebyia Unuphu, Nkaleke, Echara, and Mgbabor communities.
Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration has emphasized sustainable development without incurring debt, a stance echoed by Works Commissioner Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam during a May 2025 public discourse.
Tracka’s involvement reflects growing citizen engagement in ensuring accountability, with the organization having monitored over 17,811 projects nationwide since 2014.
The partial progress in Umuoghara suggests that while significant strides are being made, challenges in timely completion persist, a concern raised by former Ebonyi State Commissioner Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwobo regarding contractor accountability.
As Ebonyi State continues to prioritize rural development, the Otsokpuru borehole stands as a beacon of success, though stakeholders await the finalization of related projects, even as the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and local authorities have been urged to accelerate the remaining works to maximize the initiative’s impact across the constituency.
