Benin, Edo – The Edo State Government has taken a decisive step in addressing the growing scourge of drug abuse by inaugurating a Drug Control Committee for the state and its local governments.

The initiative, aimed at curbing illicit substance use and promoting healthier communities, was launched by Governor Monday Okpehbolo, who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

Speaking at the inauguration in Benin, Governor Okpehbolo described the committee’s formation as “a vital step in our unwavering commitment to stopping the menace of drug trafficking and substance use among youths.”

He highlighted the devastating impact of drug dependency on society, noting that the committee’s mandate aligns with the national drug master plan to safeguard Edo’s future generations.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was represented by ACGN Fidelis Cocodia, Zonal Commander of Zone 13, who emphasized the importance of grassroots interventions, awareness campaigns, and robust support systems as critical strategies in the fight against drug abuse.

Cocodia, speaking on behalf of NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, underscored the need for collaborative efforts to address the crisis.

Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, revealed alarming statistics, stating that while the national drug use prevalence stands at 14.4%, Edo State exceeds this figure with a prevalence rate of 15%.

He warned that the state is among the hardest-hit in Nigeria, with drug abuse fueling crime and increasing youth vulnerability.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, pledged to make Edo a model for drug control through comprehensive rehabilitation programs, youth enlightenment campaigns, and second-chance opportunities for recovering addicts.

The newly inaugurated committee is expected to spearhead initiatives that address both the supply and demand sides of the drug problem, fostering a safer and healthier environment for all Edo residents.
