Benin, Edo – A bold proposal to create five new Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Edo South has ignited a heated discussion about resource distribution and political representation in Edo State.

‎The suggestion, put forward by @OfficiaEdoOsasB in an X post on Sunday, argues that the region, which contributes over 75% of the state’s resources and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), deserves greater administrative autonomy to address perceived imbalances.

‎In the post, @OfficiaEdoOsasB advocates for the establishment of new LGAs to better reflect Edo South’s economic significance. The proposed areas include: Iyekogba LGA in Oredo, where residents are urged to engage councillors, House of Assembly members, and House of Representatives members to push the initiative.

‎Okha LGA in Ikpoba-Okha, Useh LGA in Egor, Siluko LGA or Udo LGA in Ovia South-West, Igieduma or Uhi LGA in Uhunmwonde.

‎The proposal comes as Edo State, a thriving economic hub with investments in agriculture and manufacturing, continues to rely heavily on Edo South’s contributions. The region, encompassing Benin City—the political and social heart of the state—hosts key LGAs such as Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia South-West, and Uhunmwonde, which are central to the state’s IGR.

‎However, the creation of new LGAs would require constitutional amendments and approval from the National Assembly, a process that has historically faced delays and political hurdles.

‎Proponents argue that additional LGAs could enhance local governance and development, while critics warn of increased administrative costs.
