Umuahia, Abia – The Provost of the Federal College of Education, Ofeme-Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, Dr Titus Friday, has appealed for urgent infrastructural support to enable the institution to meet its mandate of training teachers.

Friday made the call over the weekend during the maiden matriculation of 160 pioneer students, where he also disclosed that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) had approved a take-off grant for the new college.

“The College has been allocated a take-off grant by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND,” the provost said.

“But we also look forward, with optimism, to further interventions from TETFUND and other relevant agencies, which will help consolidate the infrastructural foundation of our young institution.”

He noted that while a 74-room female hostel had been provided through federal intervention, the college still required several critical facilities.

According to him, “We need modern lecture theatres, academic staff blocks, administrative and library complexes, an ICT building, a college clinic, perimeter fencing, operational and utility vehicles, a reliable power supply through a generating set and solar system, and the construction of the college access and internal roads.”

Representing the Abia State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme-Uche, the Permanent Secretary, Chinyere Okeziem-Nwoko, commended the provost’s vision, stressing that teacher education remained the “backbone of any progressive society.”

She said, “As aspiring educators, you are not just pursuing a career, you are embracing a calling. You are being prepared to become leaders in classrooms, mentors in communities, and role models in our society.”
