Nestled within the Etsako Federal Constituency in Edo State, Nigeria, the Ayogwiri community, precisely located in Etsako West local government area, remains an overlooked and underserved segment of the region.
Despite its importance, Ayogwiri has endured prolonged neglect and deprivation, with its people pleading for essential amenities and infrastructure.
This community’s struggle underscores the deep-seated marginalization that has afflicted the area for generations.
For more than three months, Ayogwiri and it neighboring communities have been enveloped in darkness due to a malfunctioning electrical power feeder. This extended blackout has halted daily life, severely impacting businesses, healthcare services, and the general well-being of residents.
The absence of electricity has compounded their challenges, obstructing access to basic necessities and intensifying their hardship.
The Auchi/Agenebode Road, a vital link connecting Ayogwiri to the wider state and beyond, has been in a dilapidated state since 1999. Its poor condition has turned travel into a harrowing ordeal for commuters, traders, and farmers, stifling economic activity and access to critical services.
The Ayogwiri/Apana Road, though paved, appears to reflect political favoritism rather than a sincere commitment to development.
Meanwhile, the Ayogwiri/Ekperi Road faces a growing threat from gully erosion, jeopardizing the community’s infrastructure.
Ayogwiri lacks a dependable government-provided pipe-borne water system, forcing residents to depend on streams, wells, and other unsafe water sources. This situation exposes them to waterborne illnesses and heightens their vulnerability. Additionally, the absence of a modern government-supported market has hindered economic progress, leaving farmers and traders with limited opportunities to sell their goods.
The Primary Health Care Centre in Ayogwiri exists in name but falls far short of a functional healthcare facility. Its dilapidated state raises serious concerns, and its survival is almost miraculous given the lack of adequate staff and resources.
This deficiency poses life-threatening risks, particularly during emergencies, leaving the community in a precarious position.
The marginalization of Ayogwiri within the Etsako Federal Constituency has become an accepted norm. Residents feel abandoned, overlooked, and stripped of their rights, fostering a pervasive sense of despair. Many now question whether their circumstances will ever change.
It is imperative that federal, state, and local government authorities, along with international charitable organizations, recognize Ayogwiri’s dire situation and respond decisively. Prioritizing the delivery of electricity, road repairs, clean water, healthcare improvements, and economic infrastructure is essential.
The voices of Ayogwiri’s people must be amplified and no longer ignored.
The story of Ayogwiri is one of persistent neglect, systemic exclusion, and diminishing hope. It serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for inclusive governance and fair resource allocation.
We implore the government to act swiftly, addressing the community’s needs and empowering its people to realize their potential. Only through such efforts can Ayogwiri begin to flourish.
