Benin, Edo – The Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has kicked off its 2025 Physicians’ Week with a robust display of corporate social responsibility, offering free medical screenings to media professionals across the state.
The initiative, part of the opening ceremony for the week-long event, underscores the NMA’s commitment to fostering the health and wellbeing of journalists, whom they recognize as vital partners in advancing public health awareness.
The free medical outreach, held in Benin City, provided comprehensive health screenings, including blood pressure testing, blood sugar checks, PSA testing, and general consultations, allowing media practitioners to access direct medical care from doctors.
The event saw a significant turnout from both print and broadcast media professionals, reflecting the strong collaboration between the NMA and the media community.
Dr. Oamen John-Blaze Osezua, Deputy Chairman of the Edo NMA and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2025 Physicians’ Week, emphasized the critical synergy between the medical and media sectors.
“Journalists are indispensable partners in amplifying our efforts to improve healthcare delivery,” Dr. Oamen stated.
He added, “This outreach was designed to prioritize their wellbeing, recognizing their pivotal role in reporting on health sector activities and shaping public discourse.”
The 2025 Physicians’ Week, themed “Healthcare as a Value Chain: Building Efficiency from Policy to Patient,” aims to highlight systemic improvements in healthcare delivery. Dr. Oamen expressed gratitude for the media’s overwhelming participation, noting that their engagement strengthens the NMA’s mission to promote health equity and accessibility.
Comrade Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), commended the NMA for prioritizing journalists’ health. He urged media practitioners to take advantage of such opportunities, citing growing concerns over sudden deaths in Edo State and Nigeria at large.
“The alarming rate of sudden deaths is a wake-up call,” Alenkhe said, encouraging journalists to prioritize regular medical checks to safeguard their health.
The free medical outreach marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between healthcare providers and the media, setting a tone of partnership and mutual support for the rest of Physicians’ Week, even as the NMA plans to continue engaging stakeholders across Edo State to advance its advocacy for efficient, patient-centered healthcare systems.
