Lagos, Nigeria – Nigeria's public and political spheres are enveloped in grief following the death of Dr. Christopher Kolade, a towering figure in broadcasting, diplomacy, business, and education. The veteran statesman, broadcaster, and corporate leader passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 8, at the age of 93, his family announced in a statement.

Described by admirers as a "moral compass" and "global icon," Kolade's life of integrity and service leaves an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Born on December 28, 1932, in Erin-Oke, Osun State, to an Anglican missionary family, Kolade's early education at Government College, Ibadan, and Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone laid the foundation for a career defined by excellence and ethical leadership.

He began as a colonial-era education officer before entering broadcasting, where he rose to become Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), pioneering the nation's media landscape during a formative era.Kolade's influence extended far beyond the airwaves.

As Chief Executive and Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, he steered the company with a commitment to corporate governance and ethical standards that set benchmarks for the private sector. In the late 1990s, he served as Nigeria's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, representing the country with "dignity and distinction" amid complex diplomatic challenges.

Later, he chaired integrity-focused organizations like the Integrity Organisation Ltd GTE and The Convention on Business Integrity Ltd GTE, championing transparency in Nigerian business.

A devoted educator, Kolade lectured on Corporate Governance and Human Resource Management at the Lagos Business School (LBS) and Leadership and Conflict Management at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), both under Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos.

He also served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university's Governing Council and later as Chancellor of McPherson University in Ogun State. His mentorship transformed countless young leaders, instilling values of humility, discipline, and public service.

In a heartfelt tribute released Thursday, His Excellency Godwin Obaseki, former Governor of Edo State, who shared a close personal relationship with Kolade, described the loss as "profound." "Dr. Kolade was not merely a global icon; he was a mentor, a guide, and a moral compass," Obaseki wrote, noting, "His humility, grace, and class were a constant source of inspiration to me."

Obaseki highlighted Kolade's pioneering role in broadcasting, his exemplary leadership at Cadbury, and his diplomatic service, noting that despite his achievements, he remained "approachable, compassionate, and deeply committed to nurturing the next generation."

Tributes have poured in from across Nigeria. Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke called the passing a "colossal loss," praising Kolade's "untainted integrity" and selflessness that "shaped institutions for the better."

SystemSpecs Holdings Limited, where Kolade served as Chairman until 2022, mourned him as a "visionary leader" whose moral guidance elevated the firm into a leading African technology brand.

Professional bodies like the Nigerian Institute of Management and the World Association for Christian Communication also lauded his contributions.

Kolade, anchored in faith and family, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Kolade, their children, and grandchildren.
