Benin, Edo – The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu, has launched an ambitious infrastructure overhaul aimed at transforming healthcare delivery and improving staff welfare at the tertiary health institution.
During an inspection of ongoing projects, Prof. Ize-Iyamu showcased initiatives designed to elevate service standards, reduce patient wait times, and foster a supportive environment for staff and patients alike.
A flagship project in this transformation is the remodeled National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) building complex, dedicated exclusively to UBTH staff. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden on the General Practice Clinic (GPC), which has long served as the primary facility for hundreds of daily patients, leading to prolonged waiting times.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized that the NHIS complex will streamline staff healthcare, significantly reducing congestion at the GPC and ensuring faster, more efficient medical services for the public.
According to her, the intervention is designed to bring a permanent end to the long suffering of patients at the GPC, a challenge that has persisted for decades.
Another highlight of the inspection was the near-completed ultramodern UBTH Staff Lounge, a novel addition under Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s leadership.
The lounge will provide a comfortable space for staff to relax and socialize, fostering a healthier work environment. Integrated into the lounge complex is the UBTH Crèche and playground, a facility catering to nursing mothers among staff and non-staff.
The crèche, previously abandoned and closed under past administrations, has been revitalized, earning widespread praise as a significant achievement.
During her visit to the GPC Clinic, Prof. Ize-Iyamu addressed concerns over extended patient wait times, issuing a directive to medical personnel to prioritize prompt treatment and attention.
Her vision is clear: to ensure every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare at UBTH.
The ongoing projects, championed by Prof. Ize-Iyamu, are rekindling hope among staff, students, and patients, signaling a new era of innovation and improved service delivery at UBTH.
As these initiatives near completion, they are poised to reshape the hospital’s landscape and set a benchmark for healthcare excellence in Nigeria.
