Benin, Edo – A prominent voice on X from Nigeria's South-South region, @OfficiaEdoOsasB, has ignited a debate on equitable representation in national appointments and employment, arguing that the six states of the region—Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River—deserve top priority.

In a post on X Friday, @OfficiaEdoOsasB asserted that the region's significant contributions to the Nigerian economy warrant greater recognition through strategic placements in government roles and job opportunities.

"The six states of the South-South—namely Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, should top the list in appointments and employment because this region's contributions are the highest.", he posted

The South-South region, which encompasses the oil-rich Niger Delta, is a critical economic hub, contributing substantially to Nigeria's revenue through its extensive oil and natural gas reserves.

@OfficiaEdoOsasB's statement highlights a growing sentiment that this economic backbone should translate into proportional influence in national governance and employment sectors.

The call comes amid ongoing discussions about regional equity in Nigeria's federal structure, which divides the country into 36 states and six geopolitical zones.

The South-South's historical and economic significance is underscored by its inclusion in the mandate of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), established to address development challenges in the region and beyond, including oil-producing states like Abia, Imo, and Ondo.

Critics argue that merit, rather than regional contribution, should guide appointments, while others see the demand as a legitimate push for fairness given the region's resource contributions.
