President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has approved a significant overhaul of the country’s military leadership with the appointment of new Service Chiefs.

The announcement, made via a statement on his official X account, marks a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture amid ongoing challenges.

The reshuffle sees General Olufemi Oluyede stepping into the role of Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.

Other key appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Notably, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye will retain his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence, ensuring continuity in that critical role.

These changes take effect immediately, reflecting the urgency of the President’s vision to enhance the professionalism and vigilance of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In his address, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the outgoing Service Chiefs, particularly General Christopher Musa, for their “selfless service and dedicated leadership.”

He charged the newly appointed officers to uphold the values of professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the military, emphasizing their responsibility to serve the nation with honor.

The statement reads in part: “I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our Armed Forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture… I thank General Christopher Musa and the outgoing Service Chiefs for their patriotic service, and I charge the new Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them.”

This reshuffle comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with security challenges, including insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and separatist agitations in the southeast.

General Oluyede, who recently assumed the role of Chief of Army Staff following the death of his predecessor in December 2024, brings recent experience to his new position as Chief of Defence Staff.

The timing of the changes, just weeks before the Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025, has led to speculation about their connection to electoral security preparations, though the President’s statement frames it as a broader security enhancement strategy.

The new Service Chiefs are expected to address these multifaceted threats with renewed vigor, even as the success of this leadership transition will be a critical factor in shaping Nigeria’s security landscape in the coming months.
