Akure, Ondo – The Nigerian government has unveiled groundbreaking reforms aimed at revolutionizing the education sector, with a strong emphasis on digitalization and professionalizing teaching.

The announcement was made during the 69th National Council on Education in Akure.

Key highlights include the launch of the National Education Repository and Databank (NERD) and the Digital Nigerian Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), spearheaded by Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.

These initiatives are designed to create a data-driven, tech-enabled learning environment, positioning Nigeria for global competitiveness.

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has also gone fully digital, streamlining exams and licensing processes, while 60,000 tablets have been distributed to enhance teacher development.

A significant policy shift includes the new Dual Mandate Policy, allowing Colleges of Education to award both National Certificate of Education (NCE) and degree certificates.

These reforms build on the National Policy on Education (2013) and the Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act of 2004, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing free and qualitative education up to age 15.

The initiatives are seen as a step toward bridging the urban-rural education gap, though challenges like funding and infrastructure remain.
