Awka, Anambra – In a significant development following a violent incident in Anambra State, the Nigerian Police Force has confirmed that the soldier allegedly responsible for shooting a police officer during election duty has been identified by the military.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, November 9, 2025, along Onitsha Road, has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice from the public and affected families.
The police officer, identified as the brother of X user @DEGEO7, was reportedly shot while returning from election duty related to the Anambra Governorship Election held on November 8, 2025.
Initial reports from the scene described a tense confrontation at a military checkpoint, where an argument between security personnel escalated, leading to the soldier opening fire. The incident triggered a riot as police reinforcements mobilized, highlighting ongoing challenges in inter-agency coordination during national assignments.
In an official statement posted on X by @PoliceNG_CRU at 16:56 WAT today, the police provided an update on the situation. The statement reads:
"UPDATE: The soldier has been identified by the military and while the Command is allowing the military to finish their internal disciplinary proceedings, the officer who is the victim of the unfortunate incident is currently stable and still receiving treatment."
The post, which quotes an earlier appeal for help from @DEGEO7, indicates that the police are deferring to the military’s internal disciplinary process while monitoring the situation.
Further developments are promised to be communicated, with the hashtag #NoToImpunity underscoring a commitment to accountability.
The victim’s brother, @DEGEO7, posted an urgent plea earlier today, stating:
"SOS: My only surviving brother was shot yesterday in Anambra state by a soldier while returning from election duty. @PoliceNG is trying to sweep it under the carpet and avert justice! I need help to get justice."
He further criticized the lack of transparency from police authorities, noting that the Nasarawa State Police PRO claimed ignorance of the matter 24 hours after the incident, while the Anambra State PRO insisted the issue was resolved without disclosing details, suggesting the family travel to Anambra for more information.
The shooting comes mere hours after the conclusion of the Anambra Governorship Election, which had seen a heavy deployment of security personnel.
According to reports, the clash at the checkpoint has raised concerns about post-election tensions and the need for improved coordination between the Nigerian Army and the Police Force.
