Asaba, Delta – In a swift response to what it described as a blatant act of sabotage against public infrastructure, the Delta State Government has condemned the vandalism of the newly reconstructed Okpanam Road, promising that those responsible will face the full wrath of the law.

The incident, which came to light through a citizen's video submission via the Governor's whistleblower line, has sparked widespread outrage and highlighted the ongoing challenges in protecting state investments amid rapid urban development.

The controversy erupted over the weekend when residents in the Okpanam community, located in Oshimili North Local Government Area, were caught on video digging into the freshly asphalted surface of the road to anchor canopies for a private social event.

The road, a key artery connecting vital communities and recently rehabilitated under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's MORE Agenda, was left with visible gouges and damage, undermining months of construction efforts aimed at improving connectivity and economic activity in the region.

On Saturday, November 22, State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, led an inspection team to the site on direct orders from Governor Oborevwori. Accompanied by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpanam Division and other security officials, Izeze assessed the extent of the destruction and initiated preliminary investigations.

Initial arrests were made at the scene, but the suspects were subsequently released on bail pending further inquiry.

"This visit is necessitated by the directive of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor himself," Izeze stated during the assessment, emphasizing the administration's zero-tolerance policy.

"Concerned citizens from this community brought to his attention what was being done to a road that was only recently commissioned and resurfaced. A citizen sent out a video recording of when they were digging into the asphalted part of the road.", Izeze noted

He warned that "whoever the culprits are, they will be prosecuted according to the provisions of the law," adding that the government would not allow the state to "degenerate back to a Hobbesian state of nature."

The Okpanam Road project forms part of a broader N21.3 billion initiative unveiled by Governor Oborevwori in October 2025, which includes the groundbreaking for the 12-kilometer Ugbolu-Okpanam stretch. This ambitious rehabilitation drive, touted as one of the most extensive in Delta State's history, seeks to transform transportation networks, boost local commerce, and enhance living standards in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

The vandalism, therefore, represents not just property damage but a direct threat to these developmental goals.
