PHOTO Education Enugu opens 1,600 scholarships for indigenes

Enugu – Governor Peter Mbah has approved 1,600 new scholarship slots for Enugu State indigenes pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, and teacher education programs, the state government announced Thursday.

The Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board (ESSELB), under the Ministry of Education, will administer the scheme.

Breakdown of awards:
500 undergraduate scholarships

1,000 scholarships for serving teachers pursuing Master’s degrees

100 postgraduate (Master’s & PhD) scholarships

All awards are for study in Nigerian institutions during the 2025/2026 academic session.

Teachers’ Scholarship:
The 1,000-slot Teachers’ Scholarship targets indigenous teachers in Enugu State public schools.

Recipients must:

– Pursue a Master’s degree

– Commit to 10 years of service in the state’s education system post-graduation

Applicants must:

– Be confirmed indigenes of Enugu State

– Hold valid admission into an approved program

Submit:
– Local Council identification letter

– Admission & acceptance letters

– Attestation from traditional ruler

– Passport photograph

Teachers:
– Employment letter

– All documents must be merged into one PDF (max 2MB) and uploaded online.

Teachers’ scholarship closes 8 December 2025

“This is a deliberate investment in human capital and quality education delivery,” said Education Commissioner Prof. Ndubueze Mbah.

The initiative comes as the state pushes to upgrade teaching standards and expand access to higher education for indigenes.
