Osogbo, Osun – In a bold move toward economic inclusion, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced the distribution of free Point-of-Sale (POS) devices to persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) across the state, timed to coincide with the upcoming International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.
The initiative, unveiled during a press briefing in Osogbo, aims to equip PWDs with tools for financial independence amid Nigeria's cashless economy push.
Speaking at the event flanked by key aides, including the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Mr. Akindele, and Executive Secretary of the Osun Bureau of People Living with Disabilities, Ayobami Oyetunde, Adeleke emphasized his administration's commitment to uplifting marginalized groups.
"This distribution is not just about gadgets; it's about restoring dignity and opening doors to economic participation for our brothers and sisters with disabilities," Adeleke stated.
The PoS devices, which enable electronic transactions, will target hundreds of PWDs, allowing them to engage in petty trading, mobile banking services, and other ventures without barriers.
This builds on a series of pro-disability measures under Adeleke's watch, including the presentation of health insurance cards and support gadgets to over 10,000 PLWDs in November 2024, as well as mobility aids and relief materials distributed through the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD).
Adeleke's administration has positioned Osun as a leader in disability rights, contrasting with national challenges where PLWDs often face exclusion from public services and economic opportunities.
Earlier this year, the state extended free health insurance to inmates at correctional centers in Ilesa and Ile-Ife, enrolling about 1,100 individuals, a move that underscores inclusive governance.
The distribution ceremony is slated for December 3 in Osogbo, with beneficiaries selected via the Osun Bureau of PLWDs.
