Abuja, FCT – In a move to bolster federal inclusivity, President Bola Tinubu has submitted a new nomination to the Nigerian Senate for the confirmation of Victor Ikeji as the commissioner representing Abia State on the Federal Character Commission (FCC).
The nomination was formally presented in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday's plenary session. Tinubu invoked Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to justify the appointment, emphasizing the need for balanced representation across Nigeria's diverse ethnic and regional landscape.
This fresh proposal replaces Obinna Oriaku, who had been initially nominated by the president in a letter dated October 9, 2024. While the reasons for the withdrawal and replacement were not detailed in the communication, the move underscores the administration's commitment to refining its appointments amid ongoing legislative scrutiny.
"I urge the Senate to consider and confirm the appointment of Victor Ikeji as commissioner of the Federal Character Commission," Tinubu stated in the letter, highlighting Ikeji's suitability for the role.
The FCC, established under the 1999 Constitution, plays a pivotal role in ensuring equitable distribution of federal resources, appointments, and opportunities across the country's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Commissioners are typically nominated to represent their states, fostering national unity and preventing regional marginalization.
