Asaba, Delta – Former Senator Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi, who represented Delta North Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023, has passed away at the age of 68.

‎The news of his death was announced on Friday, December 19, 2025, marking the end of a prominent and often turbulent political career that significantly influenced party dynamics in Delta State.

‎The announcement came via a heartfelt Facebook post by Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, who described Nwaoboshi as his "senior brother, boss, leader, and friend."

‎Details surrounding the cause of death have not been disclosed at this time.

‎Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori swiftly issued a condolence statement, expressing profound sorrow over the loss.

‎"On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I mourn the passing of my dear friend, Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi," the governor said.

‎He described the late senator as a "proud son of Delta State and a courageous defender of the Anioma cause," whose contributions to nation-building and advocacy for the Niger Delta region would remain indelible.

‎Oborevwori highlighted Nwaoboshi's impactful tenure in the National Assembly, where he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, and praised his "selfless service and unwavering commitment to democracy."

‎He also noted Nwaoboshi's two terms as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, underscoring his rich political pedigree.Born in 1958, Nwaoboshi's political journey began in the late 1970s as an aide to former Bendel State Governor Samuel Ogbemudia.

‎He later served as political adviser to Governor James Ibori and Chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Elected to the Senate in 2015 under the PDP, he was re-elected in 2019 amid legal challenges over his nomination, which were ultimately resolved in his favor.

‎His career was marked by notable controversies, including a high-profile money laundering case involving N322 million linked to the purchase of a property in Lagos. In 2022, the Court of Appeal sentenced him to seven years in prison, but the Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2023, acquitting him and his associated companies.
