Kassim Afegbua is the veteran, battle-tested media consultant to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the forthcoming September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.
In a widely-circulated statement by him posted on the social media, he faulted Governor Godwin Obaseki for always boasting about his "fulfilled promises" and becoming angry in response to APC's recent demand that his PDP administration should be probed by EFCC over several allegations of corruption by his government.
Afegbua then took a swipe at Obaseki declaring that the governor has failed to deliver on his promises to Edo people. This is even as the governor gleefully announced to the world on June 30, 2024 in a Benin interview with press men that he has surpassed all his promises made to Edo people.
Well, Afegbua is not someone who talks without evidence of Obaseki's chronic failed promises. He brings to the fore, for instance, the case of Sobe Farm Settlement now in ruins and is not producing maize but is today a hunting ground for ferocious hoodlums.
Afegbua didn't lie. Sobe Farm Settlement at inception, process and finality stage was a mere media event full as usual with only Obasekian propaganda, sound and fury. No substance. Nothing!!
BENDEL Mirror online newspaper has a dossier on this failed Sobe misadventure of Obaseki and others since he became governor of Edo State.
All said, my concern today is to briefly say here that Afegbua told the whole truth about Obaseki's clueless failures in government.
See, that Sobe Farm Settlement was a failed characteristic experimentation by Obaseki in governance in which he promised to deliver maize to offtakers and create millionaires of the farm settlers. This was not achieved. Rather, he impoverished them.
Secondly, go and grab a copy of Nigerian Observer of November 27, 2017. The government's media mouthpiece informed Edo people to expect reduced cost of road construction in future. Why? It is because the government is carrying out new technology on the California Road Bearing Soil Test on the 6.5 kilometer laterite road leading to the Sobe Farm Settlement. So, hopefully Edo State will discard for good the "old" system of using stone base on roads before asphalting. This will be replaced with new earthzyme technology that compact and harden the soil before laying asphalt.
Till date, earthzymatic road are no in sight. No where to be found in Edo State. Money wasted on project.
Also, Afegbua spoke about the undelivered healthcare promises of Obaseki. Once again, Afegbua didn't lie.
Nigerian Observer of October 24, 2017 screamed with this headline: 'Obaseki To Construct General Hospital In Uhunmwonde'
Obaseki made the pledge to build the hospital while addressing party faithfuls in Ehor, the administrative headquarters of Uhunmwonde Local Government Council.
He announced that contract for the hospital has been awarded.
He explained: "I am not happy with the level of progress in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area. Why should we be the least developed in the state when you have one of the largest land mass in the state?"
Is there a general hospital in Uhunmwonde local council area today? No!! Another failed promise of Obaseki.
This is not all in my limited dossier presentation. More exposures.
On August 10, 2017 Obaseki also told Edo people that experts have been assembled to reposition agriculture in the state.
He made the disclosure while inaugurating a 15-man Governor's Council On Agriculture.
According to him, the council will enable his administration to make Edo State the No. 1 Crop Zone especially in oil palm, tubers, cocoa, rice, vegetables and aquaculture. Because of the government's fixation for cash crop revenue, it ignored the food crops and paid attention to cash crops. That is why today our traditional Agbede, Ekpoma, Illushi or Anegbette rice are still insufficient local market brands produced by neglected smallholder farmers. Yet, rice is our staple food.
You can understand why there is rice as well as other food insecurity in Edo State.
Meanwhile, we are No. 1 in the cultivation of oil palm in Africa. We have two world beaters in palm oil production but the citizens of the state buy the item at exorbitant price outside the reach of the common man.
Behold!! That is the governance lacklustre style of the PDP administration of empathy-less Obaseki who glamorizes Edo people's sufferings.
Finally, here is another case of a failed promise by compassionless Obaseki.
Weekend Observer of September 9, 2017 reported that Edo State Government is set to revive aĺl the 58 tourist sites in Edo State. Go round these sites, there is not one of them undergoing significant reforms to reposition them as destinations for tourists.
The only scheme the PDP under Obaseki is interested in is the nebulous EMOWAA, now MOWAA project in his designated Benin Cultural District that is neither here nor there.
Having gone this far, it is clear that the PDP and Obaseki are rolling stones that are unable to gather mosses of critical achievements as pointed out by Kassim Afegbua.
If godfather Obaseki is a failure, is it wise to vote for his godson Asue Ighodalo who wants to continue the failures of Obaseki?
